Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death worldwide, and atherosclerosis (AT) is the main pathophysiological mechanism of this disease process

The researchers used the MeSH search terms "osteoarthritis", "aorta", "carotid artery", "intima-media thickness", "coronary artery disease", "atherosclerosis", "cardiovascular disease" and "death" ", which retrieved relevant articles in PubMed, Web of Science, LILACS, and SciELO receipts until September 2021

RESULTS: A total of 49 studies, including 552,857 OA patients and 688,820 healthy controls, were included in the narrative review and 33 studies were included in the meta-analysis

Taken together, the findings of this study suggest that OA is associated with subclinical AT, but only in weight-bearing joints, OA is associated with CV disease
