Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of primary liver malignancies, accounting for 70-90% of primary liver malignancies.
Early HCC recurrence is defined as the appearance of new HCC lesions in the liver within 2 years after surgical resection, and the appearance of new lesions more than 2 years after surgical resection is considered to be a multicentric liver cancer in the background of liver cirrhosis, which has nothing to do with the original lesion.
Energy spectrum CT is a newly introduced scan mode that can reduce beam hardening artifacts and can accurately obtain the decomposition image required for quantitative iodine concentration (IC) measurement.
Recently, a study published in the journal European Radiology showed that the standardized iodine concentration (NIC) extracted from the angiogenesis analysis of HCC lesions is related to the tumor microvessel density and early recurrence of HCC patients, thus confirming that NIC can be used as an early recurrence after surgical resection.
This prospective study included 71 patients with solitary HCC who had undergone surgical resection, and each patient underwent preoperative energy spectrum CT examinations between November 2014 and June 2016.

The normalized iodine concentration in the arterial phase of energy spectrum CT reflects tumor-related angiogenesis and is a potential predictive biomarker for early recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma.
