ON NOVEMBER 12 (UPI) -- European Union lawmakers have voted in favour of a trade deal that would eliminate EU tariffs on U.S. lobsters.
the European Parliament's trade committee backed the deal by 40 votes in favour and 2 against.
In August, Robert Lighthizer, the US trade representative, and Phil Hogan, the EU trade commissioner, struck an agreement that would remove 8 to 20 per cent of EU tariffs on lobster imports from the US, while the US halved import duties on certain glassware, ceramics, disposable lighters and deli from the EU.
, the trade deal covers about $200 million (169 million euros) of goods.
2017, the U.S. exports about $111 million (94 million euros) of lobster to the European Union, and the new deal will trace all tariffs paid since August 1.
new trade deal will create a level playing field between the United States and Canada, which has a comprehensive economic and trade agreement with the European Union that allows Canadian lobster exports to the European Union to be tariff-free, benefiting Canadian seafood companies.
the tariff agreement prompted the U.S. International Trade Commission to investigate the impact of the trade agreement to determine its impact on the lobster industry.
