EU approves lower taxes on Madeira rum and liqueur

The Portuguese newspaper Business Daily reported on August 5 that the European Commission has approved the Portuguese government to provide 17 million euros of financial support for the production of rum and liqueur in Madeira until 2027. The European Commission said the support included a reduction in excise tax rates on rum and liqueur to offset additional operating costs borne by producer.
In effect, this support replaces a scheme from 2015 to July this year, which previously only applied to alcohol products sold in Madeira, but this new regulation applies to the same products sold in mainland Portuga.
