Despite the proliferation of drugs to treat the disease, lifestyle changes remain the cornerstone of treatment.A recent study published by Japanese scholars in BMJ Open Diabetes Research and Care entitled "Additiveeffects of green tea and coffee on all-cause mortality in patients with type 2diabetes mellitus: The Fukuoka Diabetes Registry" suggests that drinking both green tea and coffee every day may help diabetics live longer and improve their lives. Diabetics who drank more than 4 cups of green tea and 2 cups of coffee a day had a 63% reduced risk of death within five years.Previous studies have shown that green tea and coffee contain a variety of bioactive compounds, so drinking these drinks often is good for your health. However, there has been little research on the health effects of drinking green tea and coffee in diabetics. Therefore, the researchers decided to study the potential impact of green tea and coffee on the risk of death in diabetic patients.The multi-center prospective study covered 4,923 people with diabetes, of whom 2,790 were men and 2,133 were women. The main result was an all-cause mortality rate for participants. Each filled out 58 food and beverage questionnaires, including questions about how much green tea and coffee they drank each day. In addition, participants provided background information on lifestyle factors and measured height, weight and blood pressure, as well as blood and urine samples, to check for potential risk factors.The median follow-up time was 5.3 years, during which the researchers followed participants annually through interviews, medical records, letters, telephone calls, and the municipal registration of their residence to find out their physical condition and their intake of green tea and coffee.Overall, about 607 participants did not drink green tea, 1,143 drank up to one cup a day, 1,384 drank 2-3 cups, and 1,784 drank four or more. 994 people did not drink coffee, 1,306 drank up to one cup a day, 963 drank one drink a day and 1,660 drank two or more.During the follow-up period, 309 people died, of whom 218 were men and 91 were women. The leading causes of death were cancer (114) and cardiovascular disease (76).Compared to those who did not drink green tea and coffee, those who drank green tea or coffee had lower mortality rates, while those who drank both drinks had the lowest mortality rates.Drinking one cup of green tea a day was associated with a 15 percent reduction in mortality, and drinking 2-3 cups of green tea was associated with a 27 percent reduction in mortality, while participants who drank four or more cups of green tea a day were 40 percent less likely to die. Among coffee drinkers, drinking up to one cup of coffee a day was 12 percent less likely to die, while those who drank one cup of coffee a day were 19 percent less likely to die, and drinking two or more cups of coffee was associated with a 41 percent lower risk of death.People who drank not only green tea but also coffee a day had an even lower risk of death: participants who drank 2-3 cups of green tea plus 2 cups or more had a 51 percent lower risk of death, those who drank four or more cups of green tea and one cup of coffee a day had a 58 percent lower risk of death, and those who drank four or more cups of green tea and two or more cups or more of coffee had a 63 percent lower risk of death.Of course, the mechanisms for reducing mortality from green tea and coffee are not yet clear. The researchers speculate that this is related to the fact that green tea contains many beneficial substances such as phenolic compounds, theanine and caffeine. Among them, table-free children's carnivores without carnivores (EGCG) are the most common tea polyphenols, with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-mutation properties. In addition, coffee also contains phenolic compounds and caffeine and other biologically active ingredients, such as glyphosate through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms to affect health.This is the first study to determine the association between higher green tea and coffee intake and reduced all-cause mortality in people with type 2 diabetes. It is important to note that this study was conducted in the Japanese population and there is a possibility that the results do not apply to other populations.
