AustralianInstitute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology(AIBN)TheUniversity of QueenslandPhone:07 33463851Email:h.ta uq.edu.auResearchInterestsNanosensorsfor detecting and grading diseasesMolecularimaging/Diagnosis of cardiovascular diseaseNovelnanomaterials for theranostics of cardiovascular, inflammatory, and cancerousdiseasesNovelreversible blood clotting agentsNovel approaches in diagnosis andtreatment of cardiovascular diseaseDid you know that cardiovascular disease isAustralia’s greatest health problem. It kills more people than any otherdisease and creates enormous costs for the health care system. It places aheavy burden on individuals and the community due to resulting disabilities. Atherosclerosis is the major cause of ischemic heart disease which is the mostcommon form of cardiovascular disease and the leading cause of sudden death, accounting for 34%of all death in Australia in 2008.Despite primary andsecondary prevention, thrombotic and embolic events such as myocardialinfarction and stroke remain a major health issue and are leading causes ofmortality and morbidity in Australia and worldwide. Currently, the detection of these diseasesis limited due to the lack of sensitive imaging methods and it usually involvesinvasive procedures. Our group is working on different approaches to improvediagnosis and treatment of these diseases. We are located within AustralianInstitute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology(AIBN)and has access tostate-of-the-art facilities in bioengineering/biotechnology and nanotechnology. AIBN offers a dynamic research environment and is home to world-class researchersworking at the interface of the biological, chemical and physical sciences. Current projects available include:1.Smart magnetic resonance imagingnano-sensor for detecting and grading diseasesThe early detection and accuratecharacterization of life-threatening diseases such as cardiovascular diseaseand cancer are critical to the design of treatment. Knowing whether a thrombusin a blood vessel is new/fresh or old/constituted,and whether a tumour masshas hypoxia region is very important for physicians to decide a treatmentprotocol. This project will develop smart magnetic resonance imagingnano-sensors that can detect, sense and report the stage or progression ofcardiovascular diseases such as thrombosis, the leading cause of death inAustralia and worldwide.2.Novel nanomaterials for theranosticsof diseases such as cardiovascular disease and inflammatory diseaseCardiovascular disease is the major causeof mortality and morbidity in developed countries. It kills one Australianevery 12 minutes. Unstable vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques can rupture andcause thrombosis, resulting in acute coronary syndromes, myocardial infarctionand stroke. Inflammation is part of the complex biological response of bodytissues to harmful stimuli, such as pathogens, damaged cells,or irritants. Chronic inflammation might lead to a host of diseases, such as hay fever, periodontitis, atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and even cancer. Thisproject will investigate novel approaches to develop nanomaterials whichcombine both therapeutic and diagnostic capabilities for these diseases in onedose.3.Innovative reversible blood clottingagents for emergency treatment of internal bleedingCurrently, there is a lack of effectivetherapeutics for internal bleeding following a traumatic event. In thisproject, novel reversible blood clotting nanomaterials will be designed to beable to hunt for internal injuries and bleeding and then stop the bleedingquickly.
