Co-senior author Aliza Wingo, MD, of Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, USA, said of the study: "It raises the possibility that there are genes that cause both diseases
The authors conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS), a technique that scans the entire genome for regions of commonality associated with specific conditions
While previous studies used GWAS to detect AD and depression, the current study makes the study more robust by using larger, more recently available datasets to reveal more detailed information
"This study sheds light on the genetic-level relationship between depression and Alzheimer's disease and related dementias," said senior co-author Thomas Wingo, MD
Dr Wingo added: "This relationship raises the question of whether treating depression can reduce the risk of developing dementia
"The cost of treatment-resistant depression continues to rise
This does not mean that if a person has a depressive episode, dementia is an inevitable outcome
