In the past two decades, with the rise of South American white shrimp in the European and American markets, the share of black tiger shrimp has become smaller and smaller, although some importers have also tried to open up some special niche markets for black tiger shrimp, such as high-end catering industry, value-added guaranteed products, and for some discerning customer groups, but the reality is that black tiger shrimp has never been able to match the price of South American white shrimp, so that the difficulty of promotion continues to increase
    .

However, this year's farming trends have changed, in the face of environmental changes and competition from Ecuador, Indian, Indonesian and Chinese farmers have returned to black tiger shrimp farming, so the question is, who will buy these products?

At the Global Shrimp Forum, Mathias Ismail, CEO of French company OSO, pointed out that the current market share of black tiger shrimp in the French market is about 5%, that is, 5,000-6,000 tons
    per year.
In terms of sales volume, about 80% is distributed in large chain supermarkets and 20% is sold
through foodservice, small retailers and fishmongers.

"At the end of the day, the core market is price-driven, and large-scale South American white shrimp is the opposite of the niche black tiger shrimp
    .
Our parent company, R&O Seafood Gastronomy, has spent years building its reputation in the Malagasy black tiger shrimp market and wants to make even more profits
    .
But if its price cannot be linearly related to South American white shrimp, it is a challenge
in the French and southern European markets.
Because white shrimp production in South America is so high and the size can be made larger, I think there is a direct conflict
of interest between the two markets.
    Ismail said
    .

Rogier Speelman, managing director of Dutch trader Fisherman's Choice, said: "If the price difference between black tiger shrimp and South American white shrimp is higher than €6/kg, I don't think most buyers will buy it, and now the price difference between the two is €6/kg, if it can be reduced to less than €3/kg, people are willing to accept
    it.
    " ”

Jeff Stern, general manager of U.
    S.
importer CenSea, said: "At present, the US black tiger shrimp is mainly sold in high-end retail and catering channels, similar to the situation in Europe, but the price is relatively moderate, and the price difference between the same size of black tiger shrimp and South American white shrimp is only $2/kg
    .
" The specifications of black tiger shrimp imported by CenSea are greater than 20 pieces/kg, and the large size does not necessarily help sales, mainly due to pricing, resulting in certain restrictions
    on demand.

Willem Van der Pijl, editor-in-chief of Shrimp Insight, pointed out that because of the price disadvantage of black tiger shrimp, the favorability of the western market may be lower than that of the eastern market
    .
"I believe that the consumption potential of black tiger shrimp is in China, not Europe and the United States
    .
    "

"The growing Asian market is where black tiger shrimp producers must focus on growth, as existing demand in the West can no longer match
    the projected supply growth.
Black tiger shrimp farmed in Asia and consumed in Asia is a reasonable marketing strategy
    .
Of course, since it is price-driven production, at some point in the future, the black tiger shrimp price index will have to be linked
to South American white shrimp again.
