    Customs updates South African citrus quarantine requirements and raises lemon cold treatment temperature

    On August 31, the General Administration of Customs issued an announcement on the phytosanitary requirements for the import of fresh citrus from South Africa , relaxing the cold treatment requirements for lemons exported from South Africa to China .
     
    The new requirements stipulate that South African lemons need to be processed at “3°C or below (the pulp temperature) for 18 days or more” and will be implemented on August 31
    .
    Prior to this, both parties have been implementing the standards of the 2006 Protocol
    .
    In order to eliminate harmful organisms and insect eggs, South African citrus needs to undergo a cold treatment of -0.
    6°C or below for at least 24 days
    .
     
    The International Fruit and Vegetable Report interviewed Justin Chadwick, CEO of the South African Citrus Growers Association (CGA).
    He said in the interview, “Improving the transportation temperature is very important for lemons, because lemons are a kind of fruit that is susceptible to frostbite during low-temperature transportation
    .
    So far, few lemons have been exported to China due to pest control requirements
    .
    The Chinese market has a large demand for lemons, and it is expected that this change will lead to an increase in lemon exports
    .
    After the requirements are changed this year, it is expected that South Africa's lemon exports to China will increase in 2022.
