In the first 11 months of 2022, Ecuador exported a cumulative total of 971,000 tonnes of frozen white shrimp, exceeding the 841,000 tonnes in all of 2021
    .

In terms of breakdown, Ecuador's top exporters have grown much faster than small and medium-sized enterprises, with Santa Priscila's annual exports or as much as 177,000 tons, an increase of more than
    20%.
Omarsa and Songga both export volumes close to the 100,000-ton class, accounting for 9%
    of the export share each.

Nevertheless, the Ecuadorian Aquaculture Chamber (CNA) has always been cautious about the export situation in 2023, many domestic aquaculture problems remain long-standing, and if not resolved, 2023 could be a challenging year
    .

One of the main problems in Ecuador's shrimp farming industry is the growing crime rate, with at least 63 people killed by criminals and about 1,450 injured
in the aquaculture production sector in 2022, according to the CNA.
"This year (2022), the competent authorities also received hundreds of complaints, including extortion and threats
    .
Although private farms have installed cameras and invested nearly $150 million in container tracking and surveillance, all of this is due to ineffective policies and policies that have borne the cost
of growth as the security crisis continues to escalate.

According to Fernando Luis, general manager of Totem, Ecuador's largest provider of remote security monitoring services, 7-15% of the value of the shrimp industry is lost every year due to theft and robbery, including finished shrimp and feed, with a loss of more than $500 million
    .

At the same time, shortages of raw materials and rising costs, high taxes and falling prices have severely affected exports
    in recent months.
CNA stressed that the shrimp industry continues to invest to improve production efficiency, with an investment of about $700 million in 2022, creating 5,500 new jobs
    .
"However, the decline in competitiveness is a potential problem, with about 100 by-products subject to high tariffs
    .
    "

In addition, the government no longer subsidizes diesel fuel for farms over 30 hectares, increasing production costs by about $0.
16 per pound and affecting about 82% of the country's shrimp farming area
    .
"The decision was made at the worst moment of the market and was not discussed beforehand
    .
" CNA President Jose Antonio Camposano said
    .

"Ecuadorian industry has been asking the government to implement a tariff compensation scheme that allows full or partial refunds of duties
paid on imports of raw materials used to produce goods for export.
However, the government's chronic lack of will to implement means that this is still not a friendly option
    for us.
    CNA said
