For a long time, dietary fiber has been widely accepted by the scientific community and society as a nutrient component.
At the beginning of 2020, the Probiotics, Prebiotics and Health Branch and Nutrition and Health Food Branch of the Chinese Nutrition Society organized experts in nutrition, food science, agricultural science, basic medicine, biology and other multidisciplinary experts to establish the "Dietary Fiber Science Consensus Research Project" The working group, after nearly 2 years, has publicly collected 68 common carbohydrate polymers in academia, industry, and consumers; it has carried out a research on the evidence body of new carbohydrate polymers and health (document deadline August 2020), this consensus was formed on the basis of scientific evidence and a summary of domestic and foreign laws and regulations, and a list of new dietary fibers was proposed
According to the definition of dietary fiber, 21 carbohydrate polymers have been evaluated by scientific evidence evaluation, forming the first list of recommendations for new sources of dietary fiber

Based on the basis of China's GB/Z21922-2008 "Basic Terminology of Food Nutritional Ingredients" and the background of domestic and foreign progress, the definition of dietary fiber is updated to: the degree of polymerization that occurs naturally in plants, is extracted from plants or directly synthesized ≥3, Edible polymers of carbohydrates that cannot be digested and absorbed by the human small intestine and have health significance to the human body

After scientific evidence grade rating and expert discussion, it is believed that the following 10 extracted or synthesized substances meet the definition requirements of dietary fiber, have health functions, and can be used as supplementary sources of dietary fiber

Encourage the intake of plant foods such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, and dietary fiber that naturally exists in plants, and use this as the main source of dietary fiber
