According to the latest export data from the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC), China's frozen cod imports increased significantly in week 49 of 2022 (5-11 December), with China importing 836 tonnes of frozen cod in the latest week, more than double the amount exported to the EU, which could help curb prices
    ahead of Christmas.

Norway exported 1,371 tonnes of frozen cod (HS code 03036301 and 03036303, mainly deviscerated, or H&G) in week 49, for the second consecutive week of exports exceeding 1,000 tonnes
    .
While the average export price of frozen cod fell again to 53.
    36 nuckoruna ($5.
48)/kg, it was still 32% higher than in week 49 of 2021:

According to NSC, frozen cod export prices have actually been fluctuating around $5.
4/kg in USD terms for nearly two months, and in terms of individual markets, it is worth noting that most of the frozen cod was shipped to China in week 49, not the EU
    .

China bought 836 tonnes of frozen cod, compared to 342 tonnes in the EU, accounting for 60%
    of the total.
This Far Eastern country buys at an average price of NOK 52.
11/kg, which is lower than the global average as it mainly sources products with small specifications
    .

So far in 2022, China's imports of frozen cod from Norway have increased significantly by 39% to 24,697 tonnes
    .
In contrast, frozen cod sales to the EU fell by 18% and the average price remained at a high level of NOK 55.
19/kg, in fact rising slightly weekly
    .

In addition, 165 tons were shipped to the UK, which has also seen a surge
in demand since the central government imposed a 35% tariff on Russian whitefish imports this summer.
Year-to-date, the price of frozen cod imported from Norway in the UK has increased by 31% and has been higher than that of EU imports – in week 49, the average price of UK imports was NOK 55.
    9/kg
    .

The average price of frozen haddock (tariff code 03036500, mainly H&G) fell to NOK 36.
    06/kg
after several weeks of steady sales.
The haddock market hasn't experienced nearly the same price shock as cod this year, so the average price in week 49 was only 13% higher than in the same period last year:

After some volatility over the past month, export prices for Norwegian fresh cod and haddock appeared to stabilize
    in December.
NSC data from week 49 showed that fresh cod prices fell slightly to NOK 52 per kg, still around 30%
    higher year-on-year.
Exports fell from 683 tonnes to 415 tonnes, so a corresponding rebound
    is likely in week 50.
