Cancer cells can spread through the interstitium |
This new study shows that there are tattoo inks in different layers of colon tissue and mesentery extracted from patients with colon cancer.
A study by Neil Theise, a liver pathologist at New York University’s Rothman School of Medicine recently published in "Communications-Biology" showed that there is a continuous network filled with fluid between human cells , which spans organs or is related to the spread of disease.

To test for interstitial connectivity, Neil Theise and colleagues injected tattoo ink into 3 human skin samples and 5 colon biopsy samples from colon cancer patients.
In addition, tattoo pigments or silver particles cross the traditional organ borders.
In another experiment, the researchers found that hyaluronic acid (a naturally occurring liquid known to occupy the interstitial spaces of the body) is present in every interstitial space of the tissue sample.
"By staining with hyaluronic acid, we can prove that these voids are not empty.
The research team also found that in samples from cancer patients, different types of tumors have spread to different layers of tissue along the interstitium.
"Tumors that enter these interstitial spaces will enter the lymph nodes.

David Tuveson, a cancer researcher at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and current president of the American Association for Cancer Research, said: "This is a pretty bold proposal, but it is also a proven proposal, indicating that the interstitial network of tissues may play a greater role in the distribution of the human body.
Another idea proposed by Tuveson is to explore the mechanism by which interstitial fluid enters the lymphatic system, which may lead to cancer metastasis.
