Canadian farmers call on government to revise Russian fertilizer tariffs

Several producers' associations of beans, grains and other crops in Ontario, Canada, have petitioned the government to review tariffs on Russian fertilizers, CBC TV report.

According to media sources, eastern Canada imported up to 660,000 tons of nitrogen fertilizer from Russia in the past, accounting for 85-90% of the province's trade volu.

"The 35% increase in prices, coupled with inflationary electricity and gasoline bills, has put pressure on raw commodity prices," the media sa.

As a result, Canadian farmers are calling on the government to assess the consequences of their actions and request funding to compensate those affected by the tariff hike, media sources sa.
