Postoperative anemia is thought to have adverse effects on patient outcomes, including prolonged hospital stay, increased postoperative complications, and possibly poorer survival, but few data support this vi.
This retrospective cohort study analyzed prospective data from 2983 adult patients from 47 centers who participated in an assessment of limited and clinical trials of free intravenous flui.
The primary endpoint of the study was persistent disability or death within 90 days of surgery, and secondary endpoints included major sepsis complications, hospitalization, quality of patient recovery (using a 15-item Quality of Recovery (QoR-15) score), readmission, and postoperative 12-month disability-free surviv.
A total of 2983 patients met the inclusion criteria for this study, of whom 75% (95% confidence interval [CI] 77-81%) developed postoperative anem.
CONCLUSIONS: Postoperative anemia is common and is independently associated with poor postoperative outcom.
