A study recently published in the open-access journal "PLOS Medicine" by Wang Yaogang's team from Tianjin Medical University investigated a large cohort study and found that drinking coffee or tea (or a combination of both) may be associated with a reduction in stroke, dementia and stroke.
According to data released by the National Cardiovascular Disease Center last year, there are 270 million people with hypertension in China, and the prevalence of hypertension among residents aged 18 and over is 25.
The researchers surveyed 365,682 participants aged 50-74 from the UK Biobank, 45.
Participants provided extensive information through questionnaires, interviews, health records, physical measurements and blood samples
The researchers found that those who drank 2-3 cups of coffee or 3-5 cups of tea, or a combination of 4-6 cups of coffee and tea per day had the lowest risk of stroke or dementia
The researchers believe that there is an interaction between coffee and tea linked to stroke and dementia
Coffee and tea are different beverages, but they have both overlapping and different components
Both coffee and tea are associated with lower cardiometabolic risks, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease
The UK Biobank reflects a relatively healthy population sample, which may limit the ability to generalize these associations, the researchers said
Taken together, the findings of this study suggest that moderate consumption of coffee and tea, either alone or in combination, is associated with a lower risk of stroke and dementia
