Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the sixth most common tumor of the head and neck, accounting for 80%-90% of oral malignancies
.
Worldwide, there are approximately 300,000 new cases of oral cancer and 145,000 deaths
Using the keyword combination "chronic trauma and oral squamous cell carcinoma; chronic irritation and oral squamous cell carcinoma; chronic irritation and oral cancer; and chronic trauma and oral cancer", PubMed, SCOPUS and Web of Science databases were analyzed.

.
Duplicate and irrelevant articles were excluded after title and abstract screening
As a result, a total of 375 (PubMed-126; SCOPUS-152; WOS-97) articles were screened and 343 duplicate and irrelevant articles were excluded from the study
.
Only 9 of the remaining 32 articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in the qualitative analysis
Taken together, the results of this study suggest that chronic oral mucosal irritation is closely associated with the risk of OSCC, but chronic oral mucosal irritation is not an independent risk factor for OSCC
