People with type Rh(D) are at higher risk of parvovirus
    .

According to a study published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases by researchers from Karolinska Institutet in collaboration with Octapharma, people with the Rh(D) blood group are at higher risk of contracting parvovirus
    .

The fifth disease is a viral disease
    caused by parvovirus.
Most commonly, school-age children experience common symptoms, such as red spots on the cheeks, that also spread to the arms and legs
    .
Even adults can be infected, but many do not show any symptoms
    .

In a new study, researchers can now demonstrate that if a person belongs to the Rhesus D antigen or Rh(D) blood group, then the risk of contracting the disease increases
    .
In addition to the AB0 blood group, Rh blood group is the most common blood type
    .

All infected people belong to Rh(D)

Between 2015 and 2018, more than 160,000 blood donors in Germany were screened
    for parvovirus.
Twenty-two of the blood donors were infected with the virus
    .
All infected people belong to the Rh(D) blood group
    .

"This is an important finding that has not yet been described, which could mean that Rh(D) is important when the virus enters the host cell, or it may be a new, as-yet-unidentified viral cell receptor," said
Rasmus Gustafsson, an affiliated researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet and a project manager at Octapharma.

    Women are overrepresented

The researchers also found that the risk of infection rises
    during the summer.
In addition, women and people between the ages of 31 and 40 are at increased risk of infection
    .

"At that age, there are usually toddlers around
    .
We already know that young children are infected at preschool age and then transmitted to their parents
    .
Therefore, the age and gender distribution can reflect the fact that women are in the nursing profession and caring for children to a greater
    extent than men.

The study was conducted in collaboration with Octapharma, which has several active co-authors
