July 23, 2018 / BIOON / - a new analysis published in British Journal of surgery shows that bariatric surgery may affect the risk of cancer The study, based on a nationwide population in the UK, used data from the UK's Hospital Statistics database from 1997 to 2012 A total of 8794 obese patients underwent gastric bypass, gastric banding or sleeve gastrectomy, and 8794 obese patients who did not undergo weight-loss surgery were compared The researchers found that patients who had surgery had a 77 percent lower risk of hormone related cancer (breast, prostate or endometrial) than those who had not Gastric bypass surgery maximizes the risk of hormone related cancer (84%), but doubles the risk of colon cancer The researchers believe that further research is needed to further explore the reasons behind these biological effects Reference: h Mackenzie et al Objectivity and risk of cancer, British Journal of surgery (2018) Doi: 10.1002/bjs.10914
