BGI Gene Monkeypox Virus Nucleic Acid Detection Kit

2022-9-9Press Release - BGI announces that its monkeypox virus nucleic acid detection kit (fluorescent PCR) has been approved
    by CE-IVDD in May 2022.
This kit uses fluorescent PCR to detect MPV-1 gene and MPV-2 gene fragments
    of monkeypox virus (MPV).
The test kit is a clinical diagnostic aid for the detection of suspected MPV infection cases
    .
Rashes, nasopharyngeal swabs, throat swabs, and serum specimens can be tested
    .
    Test results
are available 40 minutes after sample collection.

Monkeypox is an acute zoonotic infectious disease
    caused by the monkeypox virus.
The disease is mainly transmitted through animals, but it can also be transmitted from person to person, through respiratory droplets during prolonged face-to-face contact, contact with sick body fluids, or contaminated objects
    .

The clinical symptoms of MPV infection in humans are similar
    to those of smallpox.
Generally, after an incubation period of 6 to 13 days, symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle and back pain, fatigue, and rash occur
    .

On May 25, 2022, Saudi Arabia contacted BGI to request MPV test kits as part of
its efforts to safeguard public health.
BGI reacted quickly while its Saudi technicians helped validate and test the reagents to ensure the kit would work
    smoothly in Saudi Arabia.
These kits helped detect the Kingdom's first imported monkeypox case
    detected on 14 July 2022.
The patient was treated in Riyadh and close contacts were all negative
    .

Yujing Wang, product manager at BGI, said: "Recent case reports from Europe and North America raise the possibility that some monkeypox infections may be asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms and are therefore easily overlooked
    .
Therefore, rapid and accurate detection and identification of monkeypox virus is particularly critical
    .
