A new study published in the Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism shows that people with diabetes and depression taking antidepressants may reduce the risk of death and serious diabetes complications
People with diabetes face a higher risk of depression, which makes them more likely to die or develop complications of diabetes, including heart and kidney disease, stroke, and eye and foot problems
"The health status of patients with depression and diabetes is worse than those with simple diabetes, and regular antidepressant treatment can reduce their risk of complications," said Dr.
"People who insist on taking antidepressants have a better diabetes prognosis and quality of life than those who insist on not taking them," said research author Chi-Shin Wu, MD, of the National Taiwan University Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan
Researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study of 36,276 depression and diabetes patients to determine whether antidepressants can improve the prognosis of diabetes
