Cancer and dementia are two common diseases of the elderly, and more people are affected by cancer and dementia comorbidities.
A study published in the International Journal of Nursing Studies aims to understand how staff engaged in oncology care balances the unique and complex needs of these patients, and to explore the experience of cancer care for patients with dementia
The inclusion criteria are people who are diagnosed or suspected of having dementia (FAST score of 4 or more), and have received cancer treatment or care currently or recently (within 2 years with memory problems)
The inclusion criteria are people who are diagnosed or suspected of having dementia (FAST score of 4 or more), and have received cancer treatment or care currently or recently (within 2 years with memory problems)
The researchers extracted three key themes:
1.
1.
A detailed understanding of patients’ cognitive impairments and the impact on patients receiving cancer treatment and care will help people-centered care
2.
Providing care in a proactive manner benefits people with dementia and their families
3.
Nursing staff should recognize that people with dementia benefit from familiarity and strive to provide continuous care
When people-centered care is provided to patients with dementia, care outcomes and satisfaction are improved
