"Given the risk associated with sepsis in early infancy, it is not surprising that antibiotics are often administered immediately after birth in newborns," said first author Dustin D.
Newborns are at risk of early-onset sepsis (EOS), a life-threatening infection that can develop within 72 hours of birth, due to exposure to the bacteria during labor
Because the primary way that newborns are exposed to bacteria is during labor, the researchers decided to analyze labor characteristics to see if they could help providers identify infants with the lowest risk of EOS
The researchers also looked at babies of different gestational ages
Overall, 7549 infants were cultured and included in the study
Even in infants born in low-risk delivery settings without EOS, 80% of these infants received empiric treatment with antibiotics
"In the United States, an estimated 400,000 uninfected term infants receive empirical antibiotic therapy at birth each year, and more than 90 percent of extremely preterm infants receive antibiotic therapy," Dr.
