Alzheimer's disease (AD) eventually leads to severe cognitive decline, but most patients also experience distressing neuropsychiatric symptoms

    The researchers, led by Dr.

Surprisingly, the presence of Ab was associated with increased anxiety and apathy

"Most importantly, this study shows that certain neuropsychiatric symptoms, such as apathy and anxiety, are primarily due to underlying AD-related pathology rather than accompanying cognitive impairment," said the study's lead author, Maurits, MD Johansson said

The study did not completely rule out a role for cognitive impairment

"Combined with earlier research, our findings reinforce the proposed idea that cognitive deficits and neuropsychiatric symptoms can develop independently but in parallel with each other

Professor Hansen concluded: "These findings may ultimately lead to more efficient AD clinical trial study designs as they use neuropsychiatric symptoms as potential surrogate outcome measures

John Krystal, MD, editor of Biological Psychiatry, said of the new findings: "We used to look at Alzheimer's disease in terms of memory impairment
