Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by a gradual decline in behavior and executive function
.
One of the key early characteristics is the barrier of social cognition, which is a set of skills that support our interaction with others, including emotion recognition, the ability to recognize the emotions of others, such as from their facial expressions
Emotions are usually divided into simple or basic emotions.
These emotions are cross-cultural and include happiness, sadness, fear, disgust, anger, and surprise, as well as complex emotions such as regret and distrust
They first developed simple and complex emotion recognition uninstructed eye movement tasks, which have the potential to quantitatively detect earlier and more subtle social cognitive deficits than previous tests
.
Second, they explored the utility of these new tasks in patients with bvFTD relative to healthy controls, and determined their cognitive and neuroanatomical related factors
The analysis using the mixed-effects model showed that in a simple emotion recognition task, the average (standard deviation) change score of the control group in the target area of interest was 35 (27)%, while the bvFTD group only had 4 (18)% (P <0.

In complex emotion recognition tasks, the control group was 15 (26)%, while the bvFTD group was only 2 (18)% (P<0.

.
The poor performance of the bvFTD group was related to the atrophy of the right lateral prefrontal and orbitofrontal cortex, which were previously related to social cognition
.
The important significance of this research lies in the discovery that eye trackers are a viable tool for assessing the social cognition of patients with bvFTD .
It is well tolerated and can solve some of the problems related to standard psychometric tasks
