Radiotherapy is an important treatment for malignant tumors, but about 95% of patients will develop radiation dermatitis (RD) after radiotherapy, which seriously affects the quality of life and clinical efficacy
of patients.
The highest incidence of RD is in patients with
malignancies of the head and neck and breast.
Sanyrene (Urgo Medical) is a topical skin-protective liquid dressing
.
A meta-analysis published in Adv Skin Wound Care evaluated the effectiveness
of Sanyrene liquid dressing (Urgo Medical) in preventing RD in cancer patients after radiation therapy.
The researchers searched China National Knowledge Infrastructure, SinoMed, Wanfang Data, PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases for relevant articles
up to January 2021.
A preliminary search identified a total of 146 studies
.
After removing duplicates, applying exclusion criteria, and screening and abstracting, 19 studies including 1,508 patients
met the inclusion criteria.
Two reviewers independently screened studies, extracted data, and assessed the risk
of bias of included studies.
Results showed that Sanyrene reduced the overall incidence of RD (OR, 5.
00; 95% CI, 2.
77-9.
03; P < 0.
00001), and RD grade 2 (OR, 0.
Incidence
of 55; 95% CI, 0.
36-0.
85; P = 0.
007), grade 3 (OR, 0.
22; 95% CI, 0.
09-0.
57; P = 0.
002), and grade 4 (OR, 0.
32; 95% CI, 0.
13-0.
78; P = 0.
01).
。 In addition, Sanyrene liquid dressing improved cure rates (OR, 8.
18; 95% CI, 4.
03-16.
60; P < 0.
00001) and delayed the onset of RD (mean difference, 3.
69; 95% CI, 3.
03-4.
36; P < 0.
00001)
compared to control.
Taken together, the results of the study suggest that Sanyrene liquid dressing can reduce the overall incidence of RD and the incidence
of grade 2 and above RD.
It also improves cure rates and delays the onset
of RD.
Therefore, Sanyrene may be a superior option
for preventing RD after radiation therapy.
However, the findings were assessed as moderate- to low-quality evidence, and more high-quality trials are needed to support this finding
.
