Due to insufficient compensatory and regulatory effects of the cardiovascular system in elderly patients, stimulation of tracheal extubation and anesthesia may lead to early postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD), especially within 72 hours after surger.
A total of 100 patients aged 60-85 years were included in the study and were randomized into two groups (DEX, n = 50; control group, n = 50): conventional anesthesia and additional DEX medicatio.
The results showed that administration of DEX significantly improved MMSE and MoCA scores at 24 and 72 hours postoperatively in elderly patient.
Taken together, the findings of this study demonstrate that administration of DEX during the induction and maintenance phases of clinical anesthesia alleviates POCD, stress response, and inflammatory responses in intubated elderly patient.
