Original title: The idea that a vegan diet
brain, is good for the planet, is really worth promoting. However, a new study published in the British Medical Journal, Nutrition, Prevention and Health, suggests that a vegan diet (plant diet) may be detrimental to brain health, the key reason being that veganism is prone to inadequate choline intake.
Dr Emma Derbyshire, a nutritionist and biomedical expert at Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK, says a vegan diet that is not harmful can easily lead to a lack of choline, a nutrient essential for good health and vital to brain health. It is particularly critical for pregnant women to supplement choline during fetal development. Choline can also affect liver function, infant cognitive function and nervous system health, once lack of blood lipid metabolism abnormalities, free-based damage to cells.
our liver produces a certain amount of choline, but it does not meet the body's needs. Dietary choline supplementation is essential. Choline's main food sources include beef, eggs, dairy products, fish and chicken. Cruciflower vegetables such as nuts, beans and orchids also contain small amounts of choline.
