The UIC study, published in Brain , a journal of clinical neurology and translational neuroscience , was led by Xue-Jun, Michael A.

The study looked at how the long axons that carry messages between nerve cells in the brain rupture, which causes the muscles in the legs to become increasingly tight, leading to imbalances and eventual paralysis, among other symptoms

Previous studies using animal models to investigate the causes of nerve cell degeneration have suggested that it may be something wrong with mitochondria, the powerhouse that drives cells, causing axons to become damaged or not grow long enough

Studying human nerve cells is difficult, but Li's team was able to use human cells to convert them into stem cells and then into nerve cells with a specific type of inherited spastic paraplegia

"We found that the mitochondria in these cells were splitting, which we call mitochondrial fission, which resulted in shorter axons that were less efficient at delivering information to the brain," said Professor Li

This means that thousands of people are affected by this type of genetic disease, and this agent, a specific chain of amino acids called a peptide, may prove useful as drugs or other treatments that stop nerve cell damage or reverse the damage
