In early December 2022, Subzero, a whitefish processor headquartered in Grimsby, UK, opened a new 300-tonne (weekly) plant that it claims will provide Chinese import substitution solutions
    to European customers.

Subzero said the company, the UK's largest processor of whitefish primary products, doubled its whitefish processing capacity by opening a new 15,000-square-foot facility in the coastal town of Grimsby in early December
    .

In the UK, Subzero is one of the few companies specializing in the primary processing of whitefish, mainly producing rough processed products such as pressed fish pieces, fish bricks and block jelly, which are then sold to secondary processing plants for further processing
    .
Subzero is also equipped with a "SubShape" power press for pressing and forming processes for some ready-to-eat products
    .

The company says it has shorter operational turnaround times compared to Chinese plants, and products are fully traceable and waste is lower
    .

We know that these [China] issues make planning for the entire food industry more difficult, and in the overall state of the economy, these problems only make the procurement of high-quality ingredients difficult and more expensive
    .
With persistent unreliability and high shipping costs, it's
time to seriously consider finding alternatives to China.

The UK imported £189 million worth of seafood from China in 2021, down from £252 million in 2020
, according to the International Trade Centre (ITC).
The main imported categories were frozen pollock (£78.
6 million) and frozen Alaskan pollock (£32.
    8 million).

Subzero says its new line can process up to 300 tons of raw fish per week, and the company also has an in-house cold storage
with a capacity of 100 tons.
"The supply issue is what plagues frozen whitefish production, so it makes more sense
than ever to have a processing plant in the UK with shorter cycle times, controlled yields and lower waste.
