"The number of early strokes is on the rise
He and his colleagues conducted a meta-analysis of 48 studies on genetic and ischemic stroke, including 17,000 stroke patients and nearly 600,000 healthy controls who had never experienced a stroke
The study found that patients with early stroke were more likely to have blood type A compared to patients with advanced stroke and people who had never had a stroke, while blood type O ( the most common blood type ) was less
"Our meta-analysis looked at people's genetic profiles and found a link
The researchers stress that this increased risk is very modest, and that people with blood type A should not worry about developing an early-onset stroke, nor should they conduct additional screening or medical testing
Dr Kittner said: "We still don't know why blood type A carries a higher risk, but it may be related to clotting factors such as platelets, endovascular cells, and other circulating proteins, which all play a role in the formation of blood clots
In addition to Dr.
One limitation of the study was the relative lack of diversity
"This study raises an important question that requires a more in-depth investigation into how our genetically predetermined blood types play a role in early stroke risk," said Mark T.
The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Veterans Affairs
