Treating peanut allergies with microneedling by targeting the allergen directly to the skin can significantly improve desensitization, providing millions of people with greater protection from severe allergic reactions, a new study shows

Researchers at Michigan Medicine, in collaboration with researchers at Moonlight Therapeutics, tested a skin imprint containing peanut-coated microneedles on mice by applying them weekly for five weeks.

The findings, published in the journal Immunotherapy, showed that mice that received five weeks of microneedling had significantly increased desensitization rates to peanut allergy compared with EPIT, which required two months of treatment to be protective

"While our preclinical findings are from animal models, they demonstrate the potential of peanut microneedling to improve food allergen immunotherapy through the skin," said Dr.

About 6 million Americans are allergic to peanuts, with symptoms ranging from mild hives to potentially fatal allergic reactions

In clinical trials, EPIT has been shown to be safe, but there are differences in the effectiveness of treatments

"This is a very interesting technology that could provide a unique method of desensitization for people with food allergies," said paper co-author Dr.
