In the largest study of its kind, researchers found that high coffee consumption was associated with a smaller total brain capacity and an increased risk of dementia
This study was conducted by the Australian Precision Health Center in Sahemri and a group of international researchers.
Lead researcher and UniSA PhD candidate Kitty Pham said that this study provides important insights for public health
"Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world
"This is the most extensive investigation of the link between coffee, brain volume measurement, dementia risk, and stroke risk.
"Considering all possible permutations, we have consistently found that the increase in coffee consumption is significantly related to the decrease in brain capacity-essentially, drinking more than 6 cups of coffee a day may expose you to brain diseases such as dementia and stroke.
Dementia is a degenerative brain disease that affects memory, thinking, behavior, and the ability to perform daily tasks
Stroke is the interruption of blood supply to the brain, leading to hypoxia, brain damage and loss of function
Professor Elina Hyppönen, director and senior researcher of UniSA Australia Precision Health Center, said that although this news may be bitter for coffee lovers, it is all about finding a balance between what you drink and what is good for health.
"This research provides a lot of important insights into coffee consumption and brain health, but as with many things in life, moderation is the key," says Professor Hyppönen
"Together with other genetic evidence and randomized controlled trials, these data strongly indicate that high coffee intake can have an adverse effect on brain health
"Typical daily coffee consumption is between one or two cups of standard coffee
"However, if you find that your coffee consumption is increasing in the direction of more than 6 cups a day, then you should carefully consider refilling
