The Cancer Grand Challenge, a funding scheme co-sponsored by Cancer Research UK and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), brings together a diverse community of world-class researchers to tackle cancer's toughest challenges
.
Researchers, patient advocates and the public are invited to submit input to shape the next round of funding and help drive important progress
in the fight against cancer.
"The Cancer Grand Challenge aims to identify challenges that really spark the imagination of the research community, and then make progress
on those challenges.
But we need input and ideas from all over the world," said
Professor David Lane, Chair of the Cancer Grand Challenge Scientific Committee.
"Making this public call for ideas around the toughest challenges in cancer research will help shape our next round of funding
.
"
Cancer Research UK has been funding the Cancer Grand Challenge since 2015 and they've seen teams make incredible discoveries
.
This will be the second round of teams funded under the new NCI partnership, which takes a completely different initiative, increasing the scope, depth and breadth
of the research undertaken.
Empowering the global research community
The purpose of challenge counseling is to identify challenges that, if addressed, could revolutionize the way
we approach the disease.
This is a unique opportunity
to shape cancer research funding on a global scale.
In addition to Cancer Research UK and the National Cancer Institute, other partners in the third round of the program include the Mark Cancer Research Foundation and the Spanish Anti-Cancer Society
.
"The Cancer Grand Challenge is about partnerships, innovation and global collaboration
.
Dr.
Dinah S.
Singer, associate director of science strategy and development at NCI, said, "Bringing together researchers from around the world will generate new approaches and perspectives across the cancer research continuum that should lead to significant advances
in our understanding of cancer.
" "The Cancer Challenge allows us to go beyond what traditional mechanisms can support
.
We now look forward to insights from the global cancer research community to help identify new challenges that can further deepen our knowledge
.
" ”
The submission portal opened on October 24, 2022 and closed
on November 28, 2022.

The final shortlisted challenge will be announced in March 2023, and participating teams are invited to apply for $25 million in funding
.
About the Cancer Challenge
Co-founded in 2020 by two of the world's largest funders of cancer research: Cancer Research UK and National Cancer Institute, the Cancer Challenge supports a global community of diverse, world-class research teams coming together to think differently and tackle some of cancer's toughest challenges
.
These are obstacles that continue to impede progress, and no single scientist, institution or country can solve them
alone.
With a prize of up to $25 million, the Cancer Grand Challenge team has the ability to transcend traditional boundaries of geography and discipline to make progress
on the cancer treatments we desperately need.
