The University at Buffalo has received a $2.
The research, led by Associate Professor Sukyung Woo, Ph.
High-grade serous ovarian cancer is the most common malignant ovarian cancer, accounting for nearly 80 percent of ovarian cancer deaths, Woo said
Unlike most other cancers, ovarian cancer cells metastasize primarily in the abdomen, preferably in lipid-rich areas such as the omentum
The researchers will also explore the importance of ovarian cancer cells' ability to form spherical cell clusters that travel through body fluids to new locations in the abdomen
APJ facilitates the spread and chemotherapy of ovarian cancer cells by regulating the ovarian cancer cells' ability to form spheroids and switching their metabolism to use lipids for energy and support the formation of new blood vessels through a process called angiogenesis, Woo said.
Previous research led by Woo found that higher expression of apelin and APJ in the tumor microenvironment caused ovarian cancer cells to increase the use of lipids for energy, thereby improving cell survival, fitness and proliferation
The findings also suggest that blocking the APJ pathway may reduce the risk of cancer spreading and improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy targeting ovarian cancer, Woo said
