In a recent study by the University of Lund and the University of Gothenburg, interviews were conducted with patients ten years after undergoing bariatric surgery
"This is one of the few follow-ups from a patient's perspective so long after surgery," said My Engstroumlm, a nursing researcher at the University of Gothenburg
Eighteen patients received research visits
However, although surgery has brought some changes, many people describe their existence and the body they have changed as a new normal person, or their new daily life
It's interesting to hear this news because more than 70% of the people we interviewed have actually experienced events listed as complications by medical institutions, such as malnutrition, abdominal pain, gallbladder surgery or intestinal obstruction
The subjects reported that they still had difficulty controlling their lives and weight after the operation
Some interviewees also talked about physical activity as a continuing cause of bad conscience
"Even if overweight no longer exists or does not constitute a real obstacle, the old self-image is still an obstacle to progress
The common response of most of the interviewed patients is that they are extremely grateful to the operation itself and the society that bears the cost of the operation
"The follow-up of these patients is often insufficient and must be improved," Kajsa Jauml said.
“Those who encounter obesity surgery patients in the process of work need both to help produce realistic expectations about the changes that may occur in the surgery.
