On November 3, 2021, the team of researcher Zheng Ruimao from Peking University School of Basic Medicine published a research paper titled Withaferin A Promotes White Adipose Browning and Prevents Obesity Through Sympathetic Nerve-Activated Prdm16-FATP1 Axis online in Diabetes magazine
In recent years, cutting-edge medical research has revealed that browning of white adipose tissue (browning of white adipose tissue) may become a new treatment method and play a role in the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity
Withaferin A is a pharmaceutical compound with metabolic regulation
The research team found that sympathetic nerves play a key role in causing white adipose tissue to brown
The study further found that the expression levels of Prdm16 and FATP1 in human subcutaneous adipose tissue are positively correlated with the expression levels of sympathetic neurotransmitter synthase (DβH) and the key metabolic transcription factor PGC1α; not only that, exercise, etc.
Mechanism diagram: The mechanism of sympathetic nerve-Prdm16-FATP1 axis mediated browning of white adipose tissue

In summary, this study suggests that the transcription factor Prdm16 and the fatty acid transporter FATP1 may not only be the key mediators of sympathetic nerves in inducing white adipose tissue browning, but may also be the key molecular targets of drug compounds inducing white adipose tissue browning.
Master student Guo Bingbing and PhD student Liu Jiarui from Peking University School of Basic Medicine are the first authors of the paper, and researcher Zheng Ruimao is the corresponding author
