Recently, Evonik announced that it plans to spend hundreds of millions of euros to build a new factory to produce fully biodegradable bio-based rhamnolipids
Peter Dekkers, Executive Vice President, Unilever Central Europe, said: "Unilever's 'Clean Future' initiative aims to phase out carbon from fossil fuels in clean products by 2030.
It is understood that rhamnolipids are biosurfactants produced by fermentation of sugars, so there is no need to use fossil carbon and tropical fats commonly used in traditional surfactant production
Johann-Caspar Gammelin, Head of Evonik's Nutrition and Consumer Chemicals business unit, said: "By building the world's first industrial-scale production facility, we are able to supply this rapidly growing market with high-quality products and further expand our Nutrition and Consumer Chemicals portfolio.
