Germany's Volkswagen AG and China's Didi Chuxing are in talks on how to form a new joint venture to supply, develop and manage "purpose-built" vehicles
, according to Reuters.
Reuters reported that the two sides are expected to sign the relevant agreement
earlier this month.
According to the initial negotiations, Volkswagen will manage a top-of-the-line service team for on-demand taxis with 100,000 new vehicles
.
Two-thirds of the new cars will be Volkswagen Group cars, while the rest will be purchased
jointly by Volkswagen and Didi Chuxing.
Notably, these plans will eventually create special-purpose cars, even self-driving cars
.
According to Reuters, citing an unnamed person familiar with the matter, "Executives from both sides have not yet provided financial details of the partnership, but this cooperation will eventually allow Volkswagen to obtain daily behavior data
on a large number of customers in China through Didi Chuxing.
" ”
Volkswagen executives say the ultimate goal is to produce and use self-driving cars
.
Regarding what a Volkswagen/Didi dedicated service might look like, the executive said, "On-demand taxis don't have real high-performance needs, and they probably don't need 4 seats
either.
That being the case, the plan presumably minimizes engine spacing and increases baggage capacity
.
”
In addition, Didi is working with Chinese automakers GAC, Chehejia to develop dedicated plug-in electric vehicles
.
