According to Mexico's deputy secretary of agriculture, Chinese Mexico will not change in any way the ban on imports of genetically modified corn or corn grown with glyphosate to the
    United States.
However, an Indiana agricultural industry leader who works in Washington, D.
    C.
, does not expect Mexico to eventually pass the ban
    .

"I very much hope that the regulations approved by the USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement) will work, and this has to be put in order," said
Ted McKinney, CEO of the National Association of the National Agriculture Department (NASDA).
He served as deputy secretary of agriculture for trade and foreign agriculture during the Trump administration
    .

    McKinney also said the U.
    S.
has always respected Mexico's long-standing model of corn production
    .

"It all started with the advent of biotechnology, and they said they weren't going to grow anything about GMOs because Mexico itself is the origin
    of corn.
But humans have been cultivating plants and animals
since the beginning of their birth.
The interesting thing is that agriculture is not driven by productivity and people's will, and we respect that
    .
Now things are starting to get better," McKinney said
    .
But he also said that many new corn hybrids in the U.
    S.
    have yet to be applied
    because of this problem.

"The concern is that now certain genetic traits are suppressed and they are not being released into new hybrids out of respect for the market
    .
" We have to solve this problem
    .

McKinney thinks they will lose too much
if Mexico eventually approves the import ban.

"I think there will be increasing pressure from Mexico, not only from the United States, but also from Brazil, Argentina and many other countries, because this decision is not scientific and has no good basis
    .
" They need our corn and soybean meal
    .
They're not going to buy it anywhere else and at a price close to the U.
    S.
, so the ordinance should be amended," McKinney said
    .

The upcoming ban, which stems from a decree issued by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on December 31, 2020, could cause billions of dollars in economic losses
    to both countries.
Mexico, however, said it plans to strike deals with individual farmers in the United States, Argentina and Brazil to circumvent bulk purchases of corn
    through the United States.

    Mexico's ban will take effect
    on January 31, 2024.
