In the first half of 2021, the United States imported 66,807 tons of canned tuna , a decrease of 22% from the 85,810 tons in the same period last year .
This shows that the quantity of canned tuna imported to the United States has stabilized after the unusual increase in demand during the peak of the new crown pandemic in the United States last year .
In fact, the amount of canned tuna purchased by US importers is the same as in the same period in 2019 before the pandemic .

Similarly, the average FOB price of canned tuna imported into the United States has risen to almost the same level as two years ago, reaching US$4,634/ton, which is also the highest price in the past five years
    .

Compared with the same period in 2020, the supply of all canned tuna to the US market has declined during this period
    .
Following the large purchases of retail consumers last year, the retailer’s dry canned tuna inventory remains high
    .
In addition, the current soaring transportation costs are slowing down the global canned tuna trade
    .
The sea freight from Asia to the United States has increased by more than four times compared with last year
    .
Canned tuna is usually sold to US importers at an FOB price, which means that the buyer is responsible from the moment the goods are loaded on the ship and shipped at the port of export
    .
Therefore, American importers have to pay for the transportation costs themselves.
The current "high" and high cost per ton of product have reduced their demand
    .

As a result, the import of canned tuna from Thailand to the United States decreased in the first half of this year
    .
According to statistics from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Thailand exported 41,746 tons of canned tuna in the first half of 2021, a decrease of 19% from the same period in 2020
    .
However, the average export price of canned tuna from that country to the United States rose by 14% to US$4,637 per ton
    .

Mexico’s canned tuna exports to the United States have also fallen by 24% compared to the same period in 2020, reaching 7,577 tons, which is still higher than the same period in 2019
    .
Mexican products are transported to the United States by truck, which makes it more attractive to American importers
    .
In addition, the United States and Mexico reached an import agreement in 2019 to avoid President Trump's threat to impose high tariffs on imports from the country
    .

Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines, other Asian canned tuna exporters, are also reducing their exports to the US market
    .
At present, only the Maldives and Spain have increased exports to this market, but the export volume of these two countries is not significant
