Introduction: in a letter to USDA Secretary avineman on December 10, the American Meat Association, the American cattle farm Beef Association and the American Meat Export alliance urged that a statement of "BSE" be added to all U.S beef export certificates to Japan The recent discovery of BSE in Japan "continues to cause huge market losses to U.S beef exporters, processors and producers," the letter said To help Japanese consumers regain confidence in American beef, the three beef industry groups asked the USDA to "provide appropriate written statements on all export certificates, indicating that American cattle have been strictly monitored and tested, and no BSE has been found."
