Kathmandu Post, March 12: International food and feed prices could rise by as much as 20 percent due to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, triggering a surge in global malnutrition, the UN Food Programme said on Friday .

The Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said it was unclear whether Ukraine would be able to harvest crops if the war continued, and there was uncertainty over the outlook for Russian exports in the coming year
    .

Russia is the world's largest wheat exporter and Ukraine is the fifth largest, the FAO said
    .
Together, they provide 19% of the world's barley supply, 14% of wheat and 4% of corn, and account for more than a third of global cereal exports
    .

Russia is also the world leader in fertilizer exports
    .
"The potential disruption to agricultural activities in these two major commodity exporters could significantly exacerbate global food insecurity," FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu said in a statement
    .

The FAO food price index hit a record high in February and looks set to climb further in the coming months as the aftermath of the conflict reverberates around the world
    .

The FAO said that only part of the shortfall in export expectations for Russia and Ukraine could be filled by other countries
    .
"It is worrying that the resulting global supply gap could push up international food and feed prices by 8% to 22%, above levels that have already risen," it said
    .

FAO forecasts that 20 to 30 percent of Ukraine's fields used for winter cereals, maize and sunflowers will not be planted or harvested in 2022/23
    .

50 countries, including many least developed countries, depend on Russia and Ukraine for 30 percent or more of their wheat supplies, making them particularly vulnerable, the FAO said
    .
"The number of undernourished people globally could increase by 8 to 13 million in 2022/23," FAO said
    .

The Asia-Pacific region saw the most significant growth, followed by Sub-Saharan Africa, the Near East and North Africa
    .

FAO urges other countries not to impose export restrictions on their own products
    .
"They exacerbate price volatility, limit the buffer capacity of global markets and have a negative impact in the medium term," the agency said
