A urinal designed by women for women has attracted £250,000 in investment from a group of forward-thinking investors
.
The urinal, called Peequal, was developed by University of Bristol graduates Amber Probyn, 23, and Hazel McShane, 25
.
The purpose of this urinal is to advocate for women's right to "equally urinate", making long queues for women a thing of the past
.
The urinals are cleverly designed to be portable flat packs made from recycled ocean plastic, the inventors say
.
In addition, they can be used six times faster than conventional portable toilets and also produce 98% less carbon than conventional portable toilets
.
The two designers came up with the original design while studying at the University of Bristol, an idea that won them £15,000 from the institution's start-up competition
.
Since graduating in 2021, they have toured festivals in the UK, getting feedback from users and tweaking their designs
.
Both were delighted with the funding
.
According to Alison Rose's review of female entrepreneurship, less than 1% of venture capital funding in the UK goes to all-female teams, and nearly half (48%) of investment teams have no women at all
.
"It's humbling to know that only 1% of women successfully raise money, and we're passionate about helping other female founders do the same,
" they said.
Hazel added: “This funding is not only a huge vote of confidence in Peequal, it is a momentous moment for peeing equality around the world
.
We are building a team to bring our urinals to festivals, sporting events , outdoor performances, etc.
”
“We’re really proud to change the way women urinate, and in a safe way, with less time in line
.
Because our urinals are modular and flat-packed, one order this summer, just About 70 trucks are off the road
.
"
Investors participating in the first round of funding included UK Design Fund, Monzo co-founder Tom Blomfield, former Gü COO Sarah Jones and angel investors Chris Stamp and Elaine Groenestein
.
Currently, around 250 units are already under construction, with several deals signed with major festival operators in the coming weeks
.
A deal with European festivals is also in the works for the 2023 season
.
In addition, Peequal is working with social enterprise Peepower to convert urine into electricity, and plans to explore converting urine into fertilizer in the future
.
