Recently, the Journal of Periodontology (JP, CAS Subcategory 1) published the latest research results of Xu Shulan's team in the Stomatology Hospital, "Periodontitis and cognitive impairment in older adults: The mediating role of mitochondrial dysfunction"
。 The study was conducted by Prof.
Shulan Xu (as the final corresponding author) and Postdoc Ang Li (first author) in collaboration with Dr.
Geerten-Has E.
Tjakkes and Prof.
Anita Visser of the University of Groningen
, the Netherlands.
This study systematically elaborates the important mediating role of mitochondrial dysfunction in periodontitis-induced cognitive dysfunction by using a large sample of elderly population cohort data, and deeply explores the pathogenesis of periodontitis-related senile dementia diseases, which has high academic research significance
in the prevention and treatment strategies of elderly neurodegenerative diseases.
At the same time, Professor Xu Shulan was invited by the American Society of Periodontology (AAP) to report on the study as a special report in the September 2022 issue of JP, and conducted a paper broadcast (Podcast)
on the innovative research results of the paper.
This is the first time that the domestic dental clinical team has used multimedia to display the results of oral clinical research in the top journal in the dental field, and this paper broadcast has greatly enhanced the academic reputation
of the hospital in the international dental field.

Combined with this research sample, Professor Xu Shulan's team cooperated with experts from many well-known international universities to carry out a large-scale prospective cohort study, and found that wearing dentures in elderly patients with total mouth tooth loss can reduce long-term mortality, and the results were also published in the Journal of Dentistry (CAS Zone 1), further enhancing the influence
of the hospital team in the international academic arena.
