a new Australian study has found that people with obstructive sleep apnea are more likely to experience changes in brain structure similar to those seen in the early stages of dementia, and that timely diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea may help prevent dementia.
obstructive sleep apnea is common in middle-aged and elderly people and is a sleep disorder. Patients sleep with obstruction of the upper respiratory tract, resulting in lower blood oxygen levels.
study of 83 middle-aged and older volunteers found that volunteers with lower blood oxygen levels during sleep were more likely to experience thinning of the left and right temporal lobes of the brain. Previous studies have found that the temporal lobes of the brain are important for memory, and that the region of people with dementia changes.
Sharon Naismith, a professor at the University of Sydney who led the study, said 30 to 50 per cent of the risk of dementia was caused by changeable risk factors such as depression, obesity, smoking and sleep disorders, and that timely diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea may help prevent dementia. Early intervention is essential because there is currently no effective treatment for dementia.
researchers are now trying to prevent further cognitive decline by treating obstructive sleep apnea.
