    Little is known about the extent of human exposure to microplastics and their health effects
    .


    Although microplastics were once considered harmless, recent studies have shown that the tiniest plastic fragments can pass through the cell membrane and enter the circulation


    The researchers used mass spectrometry to determine the concentration of PET and PC microplastics in stool samples from 6 babies and 10 adults collected from New York State and 3 meconium (the first stool of a newborn)
    .


    All samples contain at least one microplastic
