The UK government has called on interested participants to actively participate in the 5G Urban Connected Communities project
.
The project envisages the participation of public institutions and private players, such as mobile operators, service providers and equipment suppliers
.
The UK government is calling on public and private companies to participate in 5G urban connected community projects
As part of the government's 5G testbed initiative, the goal is to build a large, citywide testbed
for wireless 5G infrastructure.
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport said participants will test how new technologies can turn urban communities into safer, greener, more efficient and attractive places
to live.
The winning bidders are expected to explore applications
such as medical, mobility, tourism and manufacturing.
The 5G City Connected Communities project will also specifically target the "tight points" of poor urban connectivity, including high-demand areas such as major sites or urban centers, where poor connectivity is due to heavy use rather than lack of signal
.
Funding for the project comes from £200 million allocated by the government to develop 5G technology
.
Following the bidding, the government expects to select a site
in summer 2018.
The urban project will follow
the implementation of a large-scale rural interconnected community project in the summer.
