It's the latest oral drug to be developed, taken once a week, and has been shown in pig experiments to help patients reduce treatment failures and the emergence of drug-resistant viruses by sticking to treatment.

Giovanni Traverso and colleagues at Bregan Women's Hospital in Massachusetts developed an oral drug system that takes once a week to incorporate antiretroviral drugs into one dose. This modular dosing system folds and unfolds, supports oral use, and can last long in the gastrointestinal tract. The system can carry up to 6 different drug formulations. The researchers showed in pig experiments that the "pills" they developed could slowly release three antiretroviral drugs and maintain high enough concentrations within a week. Mathematical models also suggest that the treatment is expected to significantly reduce treatment failure and prevent new HIV cases in high-risk groups by increasing the effectiveness of pre-exposure HIV prevention therapy.
