The Slovak government has approved plans to invest €3 billion in the Upper Nitra region in western Slovakia to phase out coal power production

The investment, which will be part of the Upper Nitra Coal Region Transformation Action Plan, will be used to help local residents and businesses transition as coal mining activities in the region come to an end

Infrastructure improvements, retraining of skilled workers, business support and tourism are all included in the
transformation action plan.
The Bankwatch Network, a network of European environmental and human rights organisations, which monitors public finance agencies worldwide, called the approval of the action plan a "real victory for the local community of Upper Nitra"

Bankwatch Network said, "The action plan puts the public interest of protecting the environment above
the private interest.
